Briefly reflect on the lessons learnt from each exercise a). reflective listening b). defamiliarisation c). empathic modelling of everyday reality

a). Reflective listening

when my role was an interviewer, I felt more comfortable, because I can listen to other people’s experiences and I did not feel nervous to answer them. I also found that asking relevant questions is useful in the interview.

b). Defamiliarisation of everyday reality

This activity reminds me the feeling of waiting for public transportation. The video makes me in a specific scenario, which is helpful to build the empathy of people at the same situation. Therefore, avoiding negative features in the next design.

c). Empathic modeling

In this activity, when I was walking, I was afraid of falling down, because everything is unclear after using the cling wrap. I identified roads by lights and colors.

  1. Describe your experience of creating personas from different users’ perspectives gathered in the interview data. Was there enough commonality between the 4 people interviewed to form a coherent persona? Or did it make more sense to create a second different persona?

There are four participants in our group. One people asked questions and others answered. Members of the group took turns to act as an interviewer. Questions includes the frequency, budgets and destinations of taking transportation. After gathering feedback, we compared the similarities and differences to created a prototype of a character and, therefore forming a persona.

Commonalities between our four mainly depends on the distance to the university and the distance to bus or train stations. The limited commonality was enough for us to generate one archetype but hard to create a second different persona.

2.Do you think your final persona(s) was successful in generating empathy with     users? What would you change to make it better?

I think our final persona was not successful in generating empathy with users because of the limited data set. Our persona may just represent the behavior of the student group. Perhaps if we had more data, more accurate trends would start to emerge.

1. How did this exercise help you build empathy with prospective users?

This exercise helps us to get a better understanding of users, since we try to find problems in reality and find something that users really need. Therefore, helping designers to build empathy from users’ prospective.

2. How did the clustering of information help you to understand user needs?

The clustering of information shows difficulties in travel such as misleading by booking websites, culture problems during the trip. We can identify user needs through these experiences.

3. What was difficult or challenging with the technique? How would you do it better next time?

It is a challenge to categorize yellow post-its after extracting information from lots of interviewees’ experiences, because there’s so many data and group members alway have different opinions. So, we divided long articles into different parts and be carefully selected key points which relevant to our theme. Next time, it will be better to discuss more time and check errors together when organizing categories, because a well group cooperation contributes to a better outcome.

1. How is this sketchnoting technique different to the traditional note taking?

Sketchnoting is creative and unique. It is creating a personal visual story as one is listening to a speaker or reading a text. By contrast, the expression way of traditional one is focus on writing words.

2. How does this visual approach facilitate communication of your ideas? Conversely, how does it prevent it?

Sketchnoting combines the use of images, shapes and connectors, and sometimes it is more likely to capturing only the most important or most interesting parts of a discussion. This way increases people’s ability to recall complex ideas and concepts, helping them to better retain information, communicate and engage with others. However, sketchnoting records less details, which may make preventions to communication.

3. Personal challenges as a sketchnoter

In my opinion, it is difficult to quickly synthesise and summarise ideas by combining visuals and text, because we need to listen, think and draw simultaneously and, thus we need to spend more time to practice sketchnoting skills.
