IDEA9106 Design Thinking

Design is a state of mind

Gotta do more Gotta be more

Blog Reflection 3-wwei7942

  • Describe your experience of creating personas from different users’ perspectives gathered in the interview data. Was there enough commonality between the 4 people interviewed to form a coherent persona? or did it make more sense to create a second different persona?

There were 5 students in our group, so we decided to separate us  first and then combined it, and it was easier for us to think more questions and form personas because we have more data. As we hold different concepts for “go to cinema” but have similar background, some of us share the same point of some questions, but have totally different answers in a few questions. In that case, we had some arguments that how to create the persona. In addition, due to the lack of information and material, it is not easy to create more personas.

  •  Do you think your final persona(s) was successful in generating empathy with users? What would you change to make it better?

I think we have a relatively successful persona because two of group members share some same views of our questions. It would be better if we have more questions and more responders.

  • How did this exercise help you build empathy with prospective users?

This exercise reminded me to focus on user’s needs at the beginning and their feedback after the event. Because every plan and design is base on different requirements of the user, one design cannot be suitable for everyone. In order to be more appropriate, needs, motivations, interests and other information should be taken into account. In that case, most of the key words about the user’s preferences will be embodied in design clearly. It is true that this efficient method helps me to find out and categorize information and filter the key.

  • How did the clustering of information help you to understand user needs?

To be honest, the interview of this exercise is quite mass and cluttered. Without clustering information, most of the information seem to be disorder and meaningless. While the truth is: everything has a cause. Clustering information provides a clear and simple structure indicates the connection between the cause and decision. User needs is a kind of cause, design is also a decision.

  • What was difficult or challenging with the technique? How would you do it better next time?

When I first doing this exercise, I was confused by a great amount of cluttered information and quite hard to gain the key words in a short period. In that case, I lost a lot of detail in the yellow post-it notes part and as a result, I cannot connect and remind all the information and give a clear overview about the interview. So for the next time, I should read carefully the information in advance, and try to briefly take yellow notes as many as possible. In addition, the ability to categorizing and concluding information should also be improved.

Reflection 1-Sketchnoing

It is my first time sketchnoting , I had not even thought sketchnoting is quite fun and inspires me to add more detail and content.

  • How is this sketchnoting technique different to the traditional note taking?Compared with the traditional note taking, sketchnoting requires more creative, logicality and inspiration. When I sketch a note, word is not the only consideration, what I concern is how to arrange a wide range of information in a small piece of paper for a logical, cleaner look and emphasize my key point and idea. At the same time, sketchnoing provides the ideas of sketchnoter which are quite immediate to readers. Traditional note taking is more preciseness and has more detail and information, sketchnoting offers a bridge between sketnoter and reader and it is more intuitive.
  • How does this visual approach facilitate communication of your ideas? Conversely, how does it prevent it?I believe thought is a circle that everything in my mind have connection, visual approach and drawing provide a direct connection with each idea I would like to express in a simply and logical way. In this way, I can easily notice the information I miss and remind me the key point. Unfortunately, my drawing skill is not good enough and it take me a while. Sometime a disordered mass visual idea arrangement or structure would also confuse or mislead sketchnoters themselves and readers.
  • Personal challenges as a sketchnoter.First of all, bad drawing skill. It takes me a while to plan and draw a wide range of information in a piece of paper. Beside that, I get used to use mind map for taking note, so for sketchnoting, it seems ineffective.
