  • How did thinking in terms of shots and scenes influence your approach to communicating your design concept?

By thinking how to manage shots and scenes, our initial concept has been designed in detail and more logical. Some initial ideas of the design were change or improved as these ideas were inappropriate for filming. With the logical thought of shot and scenes, our group decided to give priority to introducing the functions of design concepts through putting it into real situation rather than just showing it inanely.

  • What motivated your choice of storyline structure? Can you think of an example from a film that uses the same structure?

During the thinking period, the main purpose of our group is to involve the design into the real life, which can be defined as “how”. How to use it is our main concern. Also, other elements, what, when, where and why are being taken into account in our storyline structure. There are such many films that showing the process of events, which aim to introduce how the character solve their problems, such as The Hangover.

  • What choices did you make about audience and style? Were they related?

The user of our initial concept is pregnant woman, so our target audiences are the women who is pregnant and their husbands. In that case, the style should be sweet and warm, and the hue is warm colors and slight. All of the ideas aim to create a comfortable soft environment.

Reflect on your experience of conducting and participating in usability evaluation, by answering the following questions:

Comment on how you experienced the technique as both user and evaluator…

For each of the 2 techniques (user observation, think-aloud):

  1. What kinds of information and insights did it give you about the usability of the prototype?

In the think aloud technique, I was required to be a user and verbalize what I am thinking, feeling and doing when I was interacting with the prototype. In this stage, I was quite perplexed because it is not I used to do in normal condition and it is difficult to talk when I am doing something else. While it is a great method to concentrate on the process rather than the result of the practice, and the process is an importance consideration of satisfaction for the design. By expressing what I am feeling when I am interacting with the design, it is easier to find what the users want and the feeling of the design. For instance, when I was doing the library exercise, I followed step by step but I was still confused by a great amount of information showing in the website. After I finished, I realized that there are other more effective methods to get the result.

As an evaluator, I found most of the users’ action were always with confusion, they tried to use their own way to achieve the goal rather than following the process. The main reason may probable be different operation habits. By observing users interacting with the design, I can easy identify users’ operation habits, their preference and what the design should be improved to cater different users.

  1. What aspects of the technique worked well or were frustrating?

As a user, there was not much feeling because I was concentrate on figuring out what the design is and how to achieve the goal in the first time. While it is a reliable method to evaluate the design because I have to express real-time feeling about the design rather than recall the feeling of each step which is forgettable.

As an evaluator, it was a bit difficult to keep the users expressing feeling and talking when they were busy, which is not usual action. While some users may give some special advises depending on their interaction to improve the design.

  • How did physically acting out to help to explore ideas?

Physical action can provide a deep insight of the process and purpose of the event, and that may not be just thought. In addition, it may also inspire me how to think of the problems as a user and how to solve it with some new ideas which can not be reminded by imaging.

  • Did you refine your ideas and solutions to the problem through bodystorming? In what way?

Design is unlikely to succeed if it just be created by imaging. In other words, by doing bodystorming, both of the idea and the solution will be well constructed and reviewed from multiple perspectives. Furthermore, creative designs can be generated when I am immersing in the real situation or position, because I am thinking and practicing the idea when I am actual doing so, experiencing the problem and showing the actual reaction.

  • What was difficult or challenging about bodystorming?

One of the challenges for me is that the scenario is not true but pretending, and the problems I was facing is also imagination. This problem was kind of confused me by the viewpoint that whether I was just pretending I am experiencing problems for finding problems, rather than the real problems in real situation.

  • Does bodystorming lend itself to certain types of problems?

As I just mentioned on the question above, I just pretend I am experiencing problems rather than actually facing problems in real situation. In that case, some of the imaginative problems are not actually existing or rarely encounter. To some extent, bodystorming is also not happen in real situation, so it just depends on the imagination of us, and it would also lead to unreliable.

  • How did taking the position of an Extreme User influence your thinking in relation to the design challenge? Was it different to how you usually generate ideas and empathy?

Taking the position of extreme user is an effective way to find the deep proposes and motivations of uses, and it is quite interesting to solve the problem. Unfortunately, it is the new thinking method and different from my usually thought due to the diversity of problems and situations. Taking the position of extreme user intend to be used in specific situation that the focus is really motivated, while the problems of reality are usually complicated.

  • Did any of the other design thinking techniques (design provocation cards, stories, storyboards, etc.) help you to work through ideas and collaborate with your group members?

Some design thinking techniques are quite helpful to find solutions easier, such as design provocation cards can collect more ideas and solutions and inspire a group of members to brainstorm and gain more innovative ideas. Stories and storyboards help us to put ourselves in users’ position and think about our reaction and need to find an effective way to solve problems.

  • Briefly reflect on the lessons learnt from each exercise

a. Reflective listening

When I am a listener, all my attention would concentrate on my hearing, I listened really careful and tried to ignore other noise from surrounding. It is a great idea that focus on the key point and remember it. On the other hand, I  felt a strong sense of insecurity when I have blurred vision. So I prefer to be a speaker rather than a listener. In this exercise, I tried to speak slowly and just express the key message to listener and make sure he or she understanded it.

b. Defamiliarisation of everyday reality

It is quite strange that watching video about the process of daily travel, because it is so different from my experience. I have not noticed my emotion of feeling when I am on my way as I too much focus on the environment and think when and where I should get off. After this exercise, I realized that I should actually experience and think about my feeling and emotion when I experience my life, even just a boring or routine thing.

c. Empathic modelling

When my vision is blurry, I found my attention is focusing on color rather than light but I do not know why. I think it may because when my glasses are covered with cling wrap, all of world I see is whited with soft light. Contrasty color is the only think that I can notice and distinguish what it is by their color.
