Q1. How did taking the position of an Extreme User influence your thinking in relation to the design challenge? Was it different to how you usually generate ideas and empathy?

Extreme User helps the designers to think about the extreme situation when they design or when they design the prototype. If the extreme situation can be solved by the design then normal user won’t treat it as a big deal. So it is also a design challenge since sometimes you have to put it to the extreme condition or situation to solve the problem.

Yes, it’s different from what I usually generate ideas and empathy. Normally, I just need to observe behaviours of the majority of users and think about how would they manipulate those situations. But sometimes people just ignore extreme user who also need to be considered.

Q2. Did any of the other design thinking techniques (design provocation cards, stories, storyboards, etc.) help you to work through ideas and collaborate with your group members?

Yes, they helped a lot. Storyboards provide us the  scene how the story begins and how it would develop. Design provocation cards can provided us some new thoughts.

Anytime when we don’t know how to continue we discuss with our group members to come up with new ideas.

1.Briefly reflect on the lessons learnt from each exercise

a. Reflective listening

This is really interesting and it help me to realise the importance of being a good listener. It is very important to be focused during the exercise. It is polite not to interrupt others when they give speech to show your respect.

It is also important to not only understanding the  meaning of speakers but also capture their feelings and emotions.

b. Defamiliarizing of everyday reality

This exercise helped people to find out the details people always ignore or take for grand during our daily life. In order to realise the aim, writing down your thought without disrupting is a good way, since this always create something new and details.

Observation through different view is another good idea. Change your daily normal point of view would provide a new way to know a object.

c. Empathetic Modelling :

By blocked with piece of cling wrap, I find out that I can not discover familiar environment in this unfamiliar way, and everything became blurry.

But I realised that this is the true life for those who have sight problems. By using this empathetic modelling, I fell what the fell, I experience what they suffered every day which is hard to imagine.

Life could be so hard only during a short period of time. I begin to cherish what I have in my hand, and it remind me the importance to stand in others’ shoes to think about a problem.

2.Complement your reflections with photographs of the process

Q1. Describe your experiences of creating personas from different users perspectives gathered in the interview data. Was there enough commonality between the 4 people interviewed to form a coherent persona? Or did it make more sense to create a second different persona?

There are 4 people in our group to take the interview. We chose “Going to the supermarket” as our topic. After the interview we found everyone’s feedback is different but very similar to each other. So we pick up the most similar results what we provide.

So I think the decisions are not enough to make difference. It made more sense to create a second different persona because other there always are some other points in common from others.

Q2. Do you think your final persona(s) was successful in generating empathy with users? What would you change to make it better?

I think our final persona only represents one type of people and we have to admit that there are too many people after all. If we want to find out the common characteristic, we have to increase our research sample instead of just four students of us.

In order to make it better, we need to take more aspects as consideration, such as , different age, gender, occupation, etc.

Q1. How did this exercise help you build empathy with prospective users?

Through this exercise, I could tell the needs and problems when the users encounter problems. Usually, the interviewees won’t conceal their true needs and problems when they were interviewed.

Collection of users need would help to classify and analyse the information during the interview. Some needs might be personal issue while some might be general approval.

Q2. How did the clustering of information help you to understand user needs?

This is a new way to collect the information of users. The clustering of information provide a way to get the need of users and understand the reason of problem the users encounter.

After categorizing different situation, the users need would be common and clear.

Q3. What was difficult or challenging with the technique? How would you do it better next time?

I think the most difficult with the technique is categorizing the needs and put them together. The second one should be recognition of the users need. Sometime finding the need of the users is not enough,  recognition of the reasons behind the problems is more important, but this is a hard work.

In order to improve the result of our research, it is really a good method to take notes during the interview, and use some marks to symbol them which can help us to categorize them sooner.

Q1: How is this sketch noting technique different to the traditional note taking?

I found that sketch noting is a really interesting way to record what people read what people heard and what people watch. In terms of the traditional note taking, people write instead of paint. People don’t really think when they write but people think when they paint. The more interesting the paint is the more easy for people to reclaim, that’s why the plots in a movie is easier to remember than the one in a book. So I think the difference is virtualization.

Q2: How does this visual approach facilitate communication of your ideas? Conversely, how does it prevent it?

In some respects, I think personal sketch noting is similar with personal coding which means it is easy to read and to understand by the one who create it. When the visual approach works, it not only record what is on the paper but also help to tell what the imagination is when the noting is painted.

Conversely, sometimes it is hard for others to understand what you want to express since the painting may just includes the main point of the idea.

Q3: Personal challenges as a sketchnoter.

I have to admit that I am completely new to the discipline of design and sketching, it is big challenge for me to learn, but I think it is really interesting and helpful.

These are my sketch notes.
