1) What kinds of information and insights did it give you about the usability of the prototype?

User observation:

User observation is an great techniques for recording the user’s facial expression and non-verbal such as some gestures and body languages.  It should highlighted that as an user, sometimes my expression cannot reflect the experiences I had before. even I haven’t realize I am smiling or I am thinking.

From evaluator’s perspective, the task requires evaluator to observe the process of online ticket reservation from user’s behaviour and what user said.  First-hand information can be collected and analysed throughout whole process, and evaluator can have an better understanding of the user’s empathy and needs.

Think Aloud:

Think aloud is the techniques trying to collect the information what user’s inside thinking. To be specifically, the users are encouraged to speak out their thoughts toward the tasks and describe their feelings, which is much actually expressed during the process.Combined with the observation , think aloud could provide detail explanation to the observation, and demonstrate or reflect the user’s experiences for a particular product because they are able to describe the accurate expression of their feelings. Because facial expression is hard to define and hard to catch immediately, therefore, think aloud allows us to directly know the attitudes of the user.

2) What aspects of the technique worked well or were frustrating?

It is really hard to find the specific information in the task3, because the font and there are too much information in the pages. The library site cannot easily to find the book based on the requirements.

It should note that think aloud also has weakness, it cannot easily to have understanding of emotions and feelings of users when they have interactive with the prototype.

1.How did physically acting out help to explore ideas?

Sometimes we are trying to generating ideas, it is highly relied on the personal opioions that ususally comes from the personal experiences and  backgrounds. In this way the concepts and ideas cannot jump out of box, while the physically acting not only allows the designer to imitate the user’s situation they may have, and gain the deep understanding of the problem through the physical visual body language.

 2. Did you refine your ideas and solutions to the problem through bodystorming? In what way?

Yes. we picked the issues on waiting in the hospital. At beginning, we thoughts there are a wide range of general issues that will be covered but we still missed some key point for a particular group. For instance, high demand of seat when the peak time, the demand for some patient with disability were not be considered, after we imitated the situation, we have awareness to conduct more design actives for the disability to provide the convenient booking and waiting system.

3.What was difficult or challenging about bodystorming?

Being creative at the beginning sometimes may lost the focus without any systematic skills, it is really difficult to find a comprehensive solution for the situation without a focus. Body storming allows us to draw some ideas what users may actual experiences, but sometimes we also miss some key scenario within one or two actors.  From general perspective, the body storming can be much effective than brain storming.

4.Does bodystorming lend itself to certain types of problems?

Apparently, physical actions and bodies language never lie to us.  They reflects the real desire and needs for the design problem. I think body storming lead to a deeper understanding of context relationship and easily for us to nurture a behaviour concepts, it broaden the scope with possibility and reality. However, it  might not be very useful in some cases. For instance, when we need find the solution such as making an application or delivery the design messages.

1) How did taking the position of an Extreme User influence your thinking in relation to the design challenge? Was it different to how you usually generate ideas and empathy?

Extreme users can be really inspiring and to spur wild ideas, it differs from the way we usually used for generating ideas and empathy. It requires the designer to have an understanding of user’s needs and gather insights about their point of views. Drawing inspiration from the users’s  perspective, and define the needs and characteristics that users may have. This assist us pull out meaningful needs that may not pop when we use questionnaire or interview to generate ideas.

2) Did any of the other design thinking techniques (design provocation cards, stories, storyboards etc.) help you to work through ideas and collaborate with your group members?

Yes, provocation cards and storyboard is really helpful for the work through ideas and collaborate with y group members. It is useful to help us to jump out of box,  getting more ideas deeply, the following is shown the extreme character that we created.

Reflective listening.

From my point of view, reflective listening is kind of interesting task that giving me insight in the empathy for the different roles. In this exercise, we spook the story that I imagine what will happen in 20 years time. I am not a great speaker because I am introverted therefore I may not be talkative to describe many great points with creativity at first. However, I thought I am happy with being a listener.  I could understand other’s opinion and try to feel what the person want to claim, even we might have some significantly different perception. I understand that everyone has different cultural backgrounds, therefore, we might have some stereotype toward some issues. Finally, I describe the story she talked about back.

Defamiliarisation Of Everyday Reality

In the second exercise, we were assigned to watch two situations related to the public transportation. One occurred in the train station and another happened on the bus. We need to observe the sounds and images, bring memories to the mind. we may easily ignore the everyday activities what we did, this activity can assist me to think about the daily activities that I easily forget, such as physical sensation.  In conclusion, it is helpful and useful to be detail-oriented for the designer.

Empathic modeling

This exercise is really funny and practical compared with the previous exercise. This exercise aims us to experience a familiar place from an unfamiliar perspectives . The photography I took is in the lecturer theater. Although I came to this place every week, but there are still some different situation when everyone participates this activity together. when we doing this, we have to rely on the sounds and colors to identify the things. It is difficult to overcome the fear  that walking without regular sight.

1) Describe your experience of creating personas from different users’ perspectives gathered in the interview data. Was there enough commonality between the 4 people interviewed to form a coherent persona? Or did it make more sense to create a second different persona?

Firstly, the interview topic “going to supermarket” was chosen at the beginning of the tutorials. Although we have same age and cultural backgrounds in the discussion team,  we still find some significant difference in the analysis of interview date due to the different gender and various level of personal expectation even the experiences. Based on the diverse behaviour variables we created,  the behaviour patterns were clarified and concluded. What’s more, the interviewee with similar characteristics was been clustered.  Overall, compared with I and Ellie, Kelsie and Demon were classified to same flock because they are more likely to shop without any consideration.  Therefore we created a persona called “impulsive shopper”. Finally, we filled personas template according to the result that we gathered. General characteristics , motivation and its personal goal are filled and  It is really interesting to conclude and imagine the experiences and characteristics of represented person.

2) Do you think your final persona(s) was successful in generating empathy with users? What would you change to make it better?

I think the final persona was generally successful because we have combined with different attributes among four users experiences already. With the insightful definition of the represented  person in the personalities, motivation and frustrations of users. However, if we are able to collect the larger size of interview data, we may able to conclude more realistic characteristic of a user based on more realiable data to support the final persona.
