Blog reflection week 9: Visual Storytelling

  1. How did thinking in terms of shots and scenes influence your approach to communicating your design concept?

Thinking in terms of shots and scenes let me analyse my design  concept more narrative. It gives me a chance to look my design in different  angles. As I never have the chance to look a person using my product in shots and science through which i can analyse all the possibilities by observation. I think it is really helpful to improve my design.

  1. What motivated your choice of storyline structure? Can your think of an exemplar from a film that uses the same structure?

Narrative structure. Lots of short videos will shot in a narrative structure when telling a story. For example, documentary videos.

  1. What choices did you make about audience and style? Were they related?

The audience of our film is general public, especially people who spend long time in their indoor space. We haven’t really settled the “movie style” though, we want to tell story in a way which is easy to understand and attractive. They are related because the purpose of the film is letting the audience know our product comprehensively.

Blog Reflection 07: Affordances

Choose one of the objects you selected and describe how your initial understanding of its affordances changed over the course of the exercise?

i choose to describe spoon. i used to thought that spoon is just a kind of cutlery for eating.

however, after this course i know that we can think object in different angles. when it  is vertical it may let us think about tools for example we can use it to poke into package, but when it is horizontal, i think about measure tool which can be used in bathroom .

Given that affordances is a relational property between a person and an object, how did the manipulation of the object and the person’s abilities inform your understanding of the concept? Did it give you inspiration or insight for how to work with affordances as a designer? Discuss this through the specific objects you explored in the exercise.

we choose to explore the roll paper. in order to figure out disable people’ need , we tie up our hand to experience the situation that disabled person use roll paper. we found that we can not grasp paper as less the help of we think out a design that we can use a button when the disabled person touch the button , the roll paper will move backward. so if disabled person hold one side  of the paper ,they can tear down paper.

Tutorial 06: Experience Prototyping

1. How did physically acting out help to explore ideas?

As physically acting out can mimic the real situation and atmosphere,we can experience the whole thing for example in the class we mimic sleeping in the airplane. In this progress , we can directly experience the frustration that many passenger may confronted with and how they feel which can help us to figure out best solution for the passenger in that situation. What more, in the progress of acting, we can also communication with our group member to improve the quality of our solution and come up with new good ideas.

2. Did you refine your ideas and solutions to the problems through bodystorming? In what way?

Absolutely- At the first step, we choose the topic “sleeping in airplane”. Then we brainstorm the current issues of the giving problem like noise and light pollution.

so we think maybe we can combine earplug and blinder patch together. However in the body storming  we find that may lead to communication problem. We can improve it by adding the rail to make the holdback movable.

3. What was difficult or challenging about bodystorming?

As the props in the room is limited,we can not mimic the real environment completely .so we may ignore some really important thing  that will also affect sleeping in airplane which will make our design defective.

4. Does bodystorming lend itself to certain types of problems?

In the body storming we do not think about whether the solution is feasible. This may cause problem in the implementing.

Feedback Received

1.I should focus on more specific aspect . For example, solving the problem that pets pollute indoor air quality.

2.I rely on familiar technology too much

3.How this system courage people change their behavior

Tutorial 02: Interpreting Data (lili2431)

Tutorial 01 Sketching as a thinking tool (lili2431)

How is this technique different to the traditional note taking?

Traditionally, I used to taking note by words. However, drawing picture is more directly to show each others’ ideas which can save time and make the communication effectively. What’ s more it can express something which is hard to express by words.

How does this visual approach facilitate communication of your ideas? Conversely, how does it prevent it?

As this visual approach, we know each other’ idea in seconds. By contrast, if we take note by words, we may spend much time to express the same thing and other people also have to spend much of the time to read it. In addition, some thing is hard to describe. Confined by  drawing pictures skills, some people may hard to express what they want by drawing.

Personal challenges as a sketchnoter.

As  I  am not good at drawing, it will be hard for me to express my idea through drawing.
