Design is a state of mind

1. Choose one of the objects you selected and describe how your initial understanding of its affordances changed over the course of the exercise?

I chose the fork as the target object, changing the original shape to a totally different style by wrapping with the cling wraps. To speak of the understanding of its affordances, it breaks my traditional idea as the fork is only used for eating. Now it seems to look like a stick.

2. Given that affordances are a relational property between a person and an object, how did the manipulation of the object and the person’s abilities inform your understanding of the concept? Did it give you inspiration or insight for how to work with affordances as a designer? Discuss this through the specific objects you explored in the exercise.

I recreate the target object in a unique way to improve my own design and promote my design thinking. As a user-designer, I think choosing different ways to create and generate the product and refine the ideas would be a good way, resulting in finding something new which are unrealized in the common consideration.

1) What kinds of information and insights did it give you about the usability of the prototype?

The usability of the prototype can address the interaction issue between the users and the design. The use of observation can reflect the user behaviors interacted with the details of the product. The use of evaluation can help to analyze and find out the potential problems and features, combining with the different types and patterns. Thinking-aloud only focuses on the verbal In addition, recording the descriptions of doing, thinking and feeling can provide a good feedback to the improvement of the product.

2) What aspects of the technique worked well or were frustrating?

During the tutorial, observing the face expression was quite interesting and helpful to realize how to feel and think about the usability of the prototype. For instance, I tried to find out what they are doing, but I felt sometimes I were frustrating. When I want to record the details and information which reflect the conditions immediately, I would miss some key information, the user’s flow, and its frequency. Handling the large amounts of real-time information is a hard task to me to improve in a more effective way.

1) How did thinking in terms of shots and scenes influence your approach to communicating your design concept?

The shots and scenes can be considered elaborately and carefully during the video producing, showing the details and the features of the design concept visually and noticeably. The main purpose of the video production is to facilitate the design ideas in a more considerable and visual way. During setting each step and stage of the storyboard will also help me to analyze the drawbacks of the ideas, leading to further consideration and improvement of the design. In addition, thinking about how to attract the audience and potential customers is also a good topic.

2) What motivated your choice of storyline structure? Can you think of an exemplary from a film that uses the same structure?

To speak of the motivation of my storyline choice, I’d like to say is the feature and the function of my design product. This product can help the users to choose the correct medicine and provide the detailed instruction in the thousands of drugs. So setting an extreme long shot, then a middle shot can embody this feature. And providing two close shots overhead or over the shoulder will further describe the details and the functions of this product by showing the communication between the users and the doctors.  So designing a story is a good tool to share the idea with the users and audience deeply.

3) What choices did you make about audience and style? Were they related?

There is a close relation between the audience and the style, reflecting the user demand and the user attitude directly. For example, selecting a wrong style to the audience would leave a bad impression of the design ideas. Similarly, choosing the wrong user group, the design will be elaborated and improved difficultly.

1.Describe your experience of creating personas from different users’ perspectives gathered in the interview data. Was there enough commonality between the 4 people interviewed to form a coherent persona? Or did it make more sense to create a second different persona?

Our theme of the interview is catching public transport.  My group member found that we have a lot commonality and we have many similar reasons to use the public transport. Because three of my group members live rather close to one and other,  it is, therefore, easy to create a persona out of the data collection.

2.Do you think your final persona(s) was successful in generating empathy with users? What would you change to make it better?

I think our group’s final persona is a good comprehension to help us to know more about how to generate empathy with the existed users. But we still need more time to refine our persona, it is not exactly accurate.  We will enhance our interview skills, and do more preparation to make it better.

How did this exercise help you build empathy with prospective users?

After reading the full interview with the prospective users, some useful information such as the background, the users’ interests and needs, the details and the issues can be extracted and analyzed effectively. To understand the voice of the prospective users better, it is necessary to use this affinity diagram to analyze the customer trends and optimize the design and the project.

How did the clustering of information help you to understand user needs?

Without the clustering of information, the amount of the information of the interview can be overwhelming. This problem can be solved by using the affinity diagram, improving the information consistency and showing the distinctive specialty. After several researchers read these related interviews, it is necessary to address the most serious problems repeated in the interviews mainly. In this way, the quality of the project or the product can be improved significantly. These projects and products can satisfy the demands of the users and facilitate the product competition in the markets.

What was difficult or challenging with the technique? How would you do it better next time?

1. The reading speed and the listening accuracy are the big challenges, I would try my best to improve reading and listening.

2.Analyzing and summarizing are also quite difficult. My summaries sometimes are cluttered and illogical which are hard to understand and use. This will affect the accurate product positioning and reasonable competitive strategy to a great extent. I would share parts of them with my group members and classmates to analyze and deal with the problems together.

How is this sketchnoting technique different to the traditional note taking?

Traditional note taking while listening involves responding, recording and reviewing, it structures the information by using words, abbreviations, and simple symbols. It is time-saving, but easy to miss or misunderstand. On the other hand, sketchnoting depends critically on the imagination and creativity. It is a defining characteristic of sketchnoting. Imagining a picture, a scene, a storyboard can visualize key information, improve the accuracy of memories. Although time-consuming, it is more creative and challenging to present the information by using simple lines and shapes.

How does this visual approach facilitate communication of your ideas? Conversely, how does it prevent it?

This visual approach simplifies the complex information and improves the accuracy of memories. Personally, using the simple symbols and connectors can make my notes more clear and logic. I can compose my notes in my personal style, which is easier for me to remember the content and details. I may miss some key words and confuse different concepts sometimes, but sketchnoting is a good way to deal with this problem.

Personal challenges as a sketchnoter.

The challenge is focusing effectively on main points within a short time. I am not good at sketching, but I can utilise its basic skills. So I need to improve my sketching constantly, combining listening carefully, thinking comprehensively and imagining creatively.
