This app is designed to be different from other apps. The apps currently are distuguished by their functions, such as walk quantify and sleep recording. However, according to my app, it would focus on which kind of people it serve. It means for different people, people may be interested in different features, for example, old people may want the app to show the blood pressure to show their health, however young lady may want BMI to keep their beauty. So, the app would be designed to be personal app.

There are a lot of apps designed to monitor people fitness. For example, the app called “smart sleep” would record the noise people make when they are asleep and analysis how good they sleep. And there is another app called “walking” would quantify how long people walk to encourage people to walk more and more to keep their fitness.

For Chinese people, WeChat is related to their dairly life. They use it to communicate with their family, write down their story to share something and they have their communities in the app to run their activities. Some companies would run the running activity for people to show off their amount of exercise so that WeChat would encourage people to do more exerise to improve their fitness.

How did taking the position of an Extreme User influence your thinking in relation to the design challenge?

I think when I use an Extreme User to image what my customer need, it would make me have a trouble because sometime I don’t have a really good understanding of these people, so that I have wrong idea in my design draft. But it is pretty good way to expend my idea, I would have a imagine from different position before I really understand my users, and these ideas would influence my next idea.

Was it different to how you usually generate ideas and empathy?

Yes. It is different from my usually do, before this, I just know if I want to generate ideas and empathy I need to interview my users and generate their idea, but this method give me more easy way to think about what is my user and what they need.

Did any of the other design thinking techniques (design provocation cards, stories, storyboards, etc.) help you to work through ideas and collaborate with your group members?

Yeah, they also give us help. Stories would help us to image the user in the real world and storyboard would give us a position to think about how our user would use our product. Through these techniques, we would have more understanding of our users.

Describe your experience of creating a single persona from different users’ perspectives gathered in the interview data. Was there enough commonality between the 4 people interviewed to form a coherent persona? Or would it have made more sense to create a second different persona?

Our group interviewed each other about the public transport in Sydney. We cut the paper into two pieces so that we can write two people at one time. Then we gathered the whole common sense to form a coherent persona. However, different people have their own experience. So I think maybe we need to create a second different persona.

Do you think your final persona was successful in generating empathy with users? What would you change to make it better?

I think the final persona was successful, we gathered the main idea from the interview which is common sense in users’ life. However, if we can get more interview information from more people with different experience, the persona would have more common sense to be close to the real users.

How did this exercise help you build empathy with prospective users?

This exercise makes me get some description about the personal activities from the user experience interviews. And through clustering the detailed information, I can have a clear understanding of users’ thoughts. Because the users’ needs are different in the specific fields, however, these differences can lead to some similar ideas. These ideas help me build empathy with prospective users, helping us extract the main idea form the huge data instead of trying to understand the users’ specific needs one by one.

How did the clustering of information help you to understand user needs?

The clustering of information help me to understand user needs by extracting the similar main idea form the specific user experience interview. This means that when I cluster the information, it is a process of managing the detailed user data, which would help to understand the main needs of the users.

What was difficult or challenging with the technique?

This difficult I think with the technique is to have good logical thinking to cluster these information. Different people would their own thinking way so that when the people cluster these information, they would focus on different point, in this way, they may miss the really good idea which comes form the good logical thinking way.

How would you do it better next time?

I think next time I would extract more useful information form the interviews, which means before I cluster the information, I do not need to have my own judgment when I get the information from interview. I would miss some useful information if I have my own judgment because something I think is not important may be important for the users.

Tutorial 2 — Jie Zeng ( jzen4529 )

  • How is this technique different to the traditional note taking?

This technique use colorful pen and pencil to take notes, it become more colorfule and visual. This note would give a more direct way to show what happened.

  • How does this visual approach facilitate communication of your ideas? Conversely, how does it prevent it?

If it draw the idea of what I want to desgin, it would be good because it is colorfule, visual and directly, however, if it wants to help me to remember what happened, I don’t think this is a good idea, because I would forget why I draw like this after several days.

  • Personal challenges as a sketchnoter.

Before I take sketchnotes, I do not know what I will write down, which would make me choose the unsuitable structure to assign my note. Another challenges is that I would forget why I draw like this way, maybe after several days, I will misunderstand the meaning of what I want to explain.
