Design is a state of mind

1. Choose one of the objects you selected and describe how your initial understanding of its affordances changed over the course of the exercise?

One of the objects I selected was a toothbrush. In common sense, toothbrush is just a cleaning tool. My initial understanding is to assemble and restructure.Three little toothbrush after winding plastic to be fixed, look like a tripod.

2. Given that affordances are a relational property between a person and an object, how did the manipulation of the object and the person’s abilities inform your understanding of the concept? Did it give you inspiration or insight for how to work with affordances as a designer?

I realized that an object has more than one functions after being reformed and restructured. Toothbrush ignore its function can create limitless possibilities. This exercise inspired me as a designer, I should abandon the inherent thought and think something new. In addition, designers should be good at finding affordances on one product.

1.What kinds of information and insights did it give you about

the usability of the prototype?

As an evaluator, I carefully observe the users and record their

facial expression, body language and intuitive comments. While

testing, the users would express their feelings by words and

2) What aspects of the technique worked well or were frustrating?

During the process of observation, I found I can quickly capture

the user in the process of using and record some of the facial

expressions and comments. However, I was confused about

the meaning of certain facial expression. And some users don’t

use to talk aloud while working, although this is a very good

1)  How did thinking in terms of shots and scenes influence your approach to communicating your design concept?

By thinking about shots and scenes, I find the design concept becoming easier to express and understand and I think about ideas deeply when I was picturing the shots and scenes.

2)  What motivated your choice of storyline structure? Can you think of an exemplary from a film that uses the same structure?
Following the guideline, thinking what, when, where, how and why, our group created the storyline structure for our works.

Meanwhile, we used the simliar structure like short film that displayed on the tutorial.

3)  What choices did you make about audience and style? Were they related?

Our target audience should likely to be international students mainly. The style should be trendy and fun. I think that the audience should be closely related to their style with the reason that we hope our style can attract more viewers.

1.How is this sketchnoting technique different to the traditional note taking?

In my consideration, sketchnoting technique presents information directly to the audience comparing to the traditional note taking. During the note taking , sketch noting technique could be considered more passionate and there are no restricktions which allows students more creative. This technique gives vivid images which helps understanding and comprehension the concept. As a sketchnoter, I discover this technique could motivate my enthusiasm to take notes and create unexpected inspiration.

2.How does this visual approach facilitate communication of your ideas? Conversely, how does it prevent it?

This visual approach could be helpful to record and understanding of a new idea especially some complex concepts. For example, learning the structure of cells in biology classes, using words and images to take notes in conjunction with traditional writing records easier to master new concepts which contain some special logic. However,,this visual approach in some case may slow down the speeds of taking note because we may always think of the information visualization and thus tied to their own.

Personal challenges as a sketchnoter?

For those who do not possess a design basis, it is difficult for me to record key information and images in a short time, sometimes taking a long time to draw, which may lose some important information.Such as the exercises in the class, I confused in the choice, image or word? Which composition of the notes? So finally the form of my sketchnote may be greater than its inner work.
