1 What kinds of information and insights did it give you about the usability of the prototype?
from the observation, i can realize that what part of the product needs to be improve. For example, in tutorial, a user try to find the cheapest tablet in a shopping website. when she sequenced goods from low to high, the user cannot find what she want , because the first result is something related with tablet rather than tablet. Moreover, i can see what part affects users’ experience most. For example, when i observe the user, she said” what!!! the function is rubbish. From these words, i can see that the function which is complaint is important for users and it should be improved.
2 What aspects of the technique worked well or were frustrating?
The good aspect is that observing the user and writing notes in a specific form is efficient to get feedback from users. Researchers can get thorough and detailed recordings. However, the disadvantages are also very obvious. Firstly, some users rarely express their feelings by words or expressions, so it is hard for observers to find whether certain function is useful or satisfactory. For example, in experiment, a user spent about 2 minutes to find the “search” function but she did not complaint anything so observers also did not make any notes for this point. But after the experiment, I asked the user “Do you think the layout of the website is reasonable ? she answered “no, they put “search” function at the corner of the website and it is difficult for me to find it but you know, it is important and frequently-used.”
