Reflect on your experience of the Interpreting Data exercise by answering the following questions:
1) How did this exercise help you build empathy with prospective users?
Interpreting Data exercise is about the Affinity Diagram which is the structuring materials through pre-established models, categories or topics. Structuring materials means this exercise is processing with different levels which is step by step. It also helps me to find users’ needs. wants, interests, motivations and frustrations. All the activities are more about users’ thoughts so that it could not be the current or related users. These activities would focus on all the users include potential users’ thoughts.
2) How did the clustering of information help you to understand user needs?
Firstly, the activities are started by the interviews. Interviews are from the potential users about their thoughts and experiences. Next, we would like to extract their words as themselves to figure out what do we need or expect. Also, we tried to find the similar thoughts from lots of different users and then summarize them into common categories and topics. Therefore, to find out what are users exactly expected, we could look for the common categories and topics.
3) What was difficult or challenging with the technique? How would you do it better next time?
Through the exercise, I find the most difficult thing is to find the similarity from different users’ needs and wants into common themes accurately. Because different people might have different opinions, experiences or feelings about one thing. Also, for the same thought, they might have different expression by interviews. So it is hard to get them into accurate common categories and name the categories correctly. Therefore, next time, I would like to pay more time on the extract users sentences from interviews which are the key points not the small issues for the specified user.
