1.How did this exercise help you build empathy with prospective users?
A good design must base on user’s needs and wants. This exercise exactly provides us a useful way to gain user’s interests, needs and wants. Looking through the whole interview, we can better interpret data by using the Yellow Post-it notes. We can mark down the key point as much as possible, and as clear as possible by using the yellow Post-it notes. The Blue one and the Pink one help us grouping our ideas into some more concise ideas. As a whole, this exercise help us gain information and ideas from the users more clearly, and we can get closer to our users. And it also make us better categorize and group ideas in order to build empathy with users.
2.How did the clustering of information help you to understand user needs?
Clustering of information can help us categorize different kinds of feedback from our users. Each user has many needs and wants, and they might come up with different kinds of ideas depend on their demand. We need to gather important and representative ideas from users, so clustering of information might be a good way to help us interpret data. The Yellow Post-it notes helps us gather useful interests, needs and motivations from different users; the Blue one helps us categorize unsorted ideas from different users into some classified ideas; the Pink one helps us come up with a higher level ideas which is closer to our users. Finally, we can sum up some ideas from our users step by step, and these ideas might help us better understand user needs.
3.What was difficult or challenging with the technique? How would you do it better next time?
I think is quite difficult for me to gain a lot of ideas from such a long interview in a short time. Secondly, the blue Post-it notes might not group the ideas on the yellow Post-it notes well, and it might lead to some misleading ideas. For fixing these difficult, I think I should improve my ability of gathering information and ideas from articles, and try to come up some representative ideas. And I also need to improve the ability to classify different data and ideas in order to gain the most valuable ideas.
