1. Choose one of the objects you selected and describe how your initial understanding of its affordances changed over the course of the exercise?
I choose cling wrap as the object. As far as I know , cling wrap can be used only to wrap up food in kitchen when its left over.So it can be just used for wrapping purposes. Then I started looking the wrap from different angles, the wrap has multiple layers . Although it is thin, it is strong when it is crumbled and can be put together to hand kitchen utensils like laddle. Then, the cling wrap is hollow from centre, this can be used to hold hanging wires of charging cables. If put in some more thought, then the rolls can be put together with some lights around to form a decorative item.
2. Given that affordances is a relational property between a person and an object, how did the manipulation of the object and the person’s abilities inform your understanding of the concept? Did it give you inspiration or insight for how to work with affordances as a designer? Discuss this through the specific objects you explored in the exercise.
Any object when used regularly tends to impose its properties as a common use that people think of. For instance, a cling wrap serves its main purpose only in kitchen. Thats what we have known till now. But by just adding a couple of features, the whole concept of its usage is redefined. Similarly, I took post-it notes and wrapped it up completely with cling wrap. It no longer served as a note, rather it was like a paper weight. Colorful, glossy paper weight. It is amazing that when an object is changed a bit on its design part, the whole purpose of it changes and it starts exhibiting other affordances. It is inspirational as a designer, as experimentation with objects and getting the best out of them is the whole point of designing.
